Historical Significance:
Camrose Normal School, built in 1915, is closely associated with the history of teacher education in the province. In 1938 its function as a Normal School ceased and during W.W.II it was rented to the Department of National Defence. In 1947 it was remodeled to house the aged mentally incompetent and also the administration.
Not only is Rosehaven a landmark in the town of Camrose, but it is significant in the province, as there are relatively small number of such buildings in such excellent condition.
John P. Smith was the minister of Education and was the man who started the site.
Administrator: L.A. Undershultz; Manager: J.L. Avery. (Inventory Site Form, 1980)

On July 11, 1912 the announcement was made by MLA George P. Smith that a Normal School was to be located in Camrose. The building would cost $200,000 with an additional $25,000 for equipment to be built. The plans for the Normal School were prepared by Mr. Blakey, the provincial architect, in cooperation with Dr. James Collins Miller, the first principal. Construction of the Normal School began in 1913 and was completed by January 1, 1915, in time for winter term classes to begin.

Normal School classes began August 23, 1912 in rooms the provincial government rented from the local school. The first class consisted of 20 students, 16 women and four men. The course lasted four months and the first class graduated at Christmas in 1912.

The Normal School officially opened October 8, 1915. Arrangements were made with the governmetn to hold public school classes in the building. This allowed for more space for the junior high and elementary classes, as well as classes for the students of the Normal School to practice their teaching.

The Normal School closed in 1938. Two years later the building became the headquarters for an army base in Camrose. The federal government used the building as an army training barracks during World War II. After the war, the building was available for use so the Department of Public Health converted the buidling into a home for aging citizens in 1947. The building was renamed Rosehaven and continues to be used today. (Heritage Collaborative, 2011)
